What skills make a good DSP?

  • The capacity to remain calm and composed in challenging situations is crucial. Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities may not always communicate in easily understandable ways. Maintaining composure and thoughtfully working through solutions, even under stress, is essential.

  • Dependability and punctuality: Punctuality is crucial for both colleagues and those we assist. For the majority of individuals, regardless of disability status, maintaining a routine is essential for achieving balance and comfort..

  • Observant and intuitive: Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) are at the forefront of individual support and can often detect when something is amiss. Family members or doctors may not always notice subtle changes, making it crucial for DSPs to be attuned to the usual and unusual patterns in the individuals they assist.

  • Interpersonal skills and a strong sense of teamwork: Supporting someone, potentially 24/7, is a team-based endeavor that demands extensive coordination and adaptability. As a Direct Support Professional (DSP), you are an integral member of a team that needs to operate seamlessly and in cooperation.
